Throughout the academic year, SVC hosts several week-long series of events on campus to bring awareness to global and local issues and encourage student action. In the fall semester SVC hosts National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week and during the spring semester SVC hosts National Volunteer Week and Green Week. Additionally, SVC hosts two on campus service opportunities throughout the year called Islander Clean and Islander Spring Clean in order to beautify our campus.
Signature and Service Events provides TAMU-CC students the opportunity to become directly involved in local humanitarian efforts through monthly acts of community service in Corpus Christi and signature events and service opportunities on campus to educate and engage students in global and local issues.
Once a month SVC members venture into the Corpus Christi community to volunteer at a local non-profit organization or community event. Each month SVC members volunteer with a different cause including Adopt-A-Beach, Strides Against Breast Cancer, Kids Against Hunger, Habitat for Humanity, Grow Local South Texas, Glenoak Therapeutic Riding Center, and Mission 911 to name a few.
General meetings occur on Wednesdays from 5-6 pm. The first general meeting will be held on August 26 for the Fall 2020 semester. Please check our I-Engage portal for a location. Alternative meetings will be Thursday after the general meeting. SVC's general and alternative meetings have the same information so if you cannot make it to one then you will not be missing out on anything. All general and alternative meetings will include discussing upcoming events on campus as well as upcoming service events and socials! Islander Clean is a campus beautification event that SVC hosts in both the fall and spring semesters. This is a great opportunity for all Islanders to come out and keep our home clean. Join us this fall on August 29, 2020 to participate!
Although Hurricane Harvey made landfall three years ago, members of our Corpus Christi and Rockport community are still feeling its effects. Harvey Saturdays are a monthly service event where students get the opportunity to help those affected by this natural disaster.
Service Saturdays are a monthly service event hosted by SVC. Each Service Saturday is different and allows students to get involved in service in many different ways. From volunteering and the Men's and Women's Health Center by putting together hygiene kits or volunteering at the Coastal Bend Food Bank packing meals and sorting food, there is something for everyone.
The BIG Event is Corpus Christi's largest student-run day of service. This spring event is an opportunity for Islander students, faculty, and staff to get into the community and give "One BIG Thanks" through signing up with a group/organization or as an individual to complete projects across our Corpus Christi community.
The Little Event is a miniature version of The BIG Event. This service event is hosted in the fall semester and is another great opportunity for Islanders to volunteer in our community.
Mini Event is a section of The BIG Event where an organization can sign up through SVC and go into the community to serve on a project! This is a great way for organizations to bond and have fun while volunteering.
Alternative breaks are a great way to travel outside of the Corpus Christi area and volunteer. By spending either the first week of winter break or spring break with SVC, you can make the memories of a lifetime. Past trips have included disaster relief in Houston, TX, healthcare in Memphis, TN, hurricane relief in New Orleans, LA, and plenty more. MLK Day of Service is SVC's way of giving back on this national holiday. From volunteering at sites like the Ritz Theatre downtown or on the U.S.S. Lexington, this is a great way to make your #IslanderImpact.
We Scare Hunger is an opportunity for Islanders to go out on Halloween and "Trick-or-Treat" for non-perishable food items that will be donated to Izzy's Food Pantry on campus for our Islanders.
